They say he was done in by bad investments.. Outside of the shady groupies and family members, these guys try to be businessmen too soon and get fleeced by crooked consultants and people supposedly who are 'looking out for their best interest'. Have fun and splurge a little but put your money up in an account that gains interest then later in your career study real estate, or a company to back, the restaurant biz, etc before putting thousands into something. Start investing when you're playing days are almost over.

Welcome to the 60% of broke NBA players, Darius.  You had a fun run.  Your education and IQ qualifies you for a new career as... food service worker, custodian, or sexton.

I remember interviews with Darius used to make me wince. He could not put two words together cogently.

I'd be in favor of a CBA rule that required 50% of all money you make professionally being put in a trust which cannot be accessed until you retire and which cannot be borrowed against.

Even Kareem went bankrupt.   It's not because they're stupid.    But really, just dump a quarter of that into Mutual Funds with any standard reputable brokerage firm.   You'll be set for life.  Then you can blow the other 75% on guns and guitars.  And if the NBA were to require that (not sure how they could), I'd be fine with it.  Even if one of these companies rips you off (they're not in it as a public service), you're not going to end up broke.

They could require it. It's a collective bargaining agreement and contract. They can require anything. You don't HAVE to join the league. Lots of other places in the world to play basketball.
